Job Summary
A public university is seeking four (4) Library Assistants for the Office of the University Librarian. Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree in Library or Information Science, possess at least 2 years of relevant library service experience, and demonstrate strong organizational skills. Key Roles & Operational Responsibilities
1. User Support & Circulation Management
- Patron Assistance: Help students, faculty, and visiting researchers locate required reading materials, databases, and resources; answer general inquiries regarding library policies and services.
- Circulation Desk Operations: Process loaned, returned, and reserved books and media materials using automated or manual circulation systems.
- Reproduction Services: Operate library reproduction and digital imaging machinery, including photocopiers, scanners, and document management hardware.
2. Collection Maintenance & Physical Stacks Care
- Shelving & Arrangement: Sort, clean, dust, and precisely shelf books, journals, and periodicals according to standard cataloging systems (e.g., Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress).
- Display & Presentation: Assist with collection audits, shelf reading, physical restoration, and setting up topical book displays and exhibition racks.
3. Library Security & Administrative Support
- Facility Oversight: Open and lock up library premises as scheduled; maintain entry/exit logbooks and execute security checks.
- Asset Protection: Monitor user study areas to protect books, computers, furniture, and physical facility assets against vandalism or unauthorized removal.
- Record Keeping: Maintain routine daily library logs, register new users, and report asset maintenance issues to supervisors.
Foundational Capabilities & Prerequisites
Required Credentials & Competencies
- Undergraduate Degree: Earned Bachelor's degree in Library Science or Bachelor's degree in Information Science from a recognized university.
- Work Experience: At least two (2) years of practical working experience handling routine library operations within a reputable academic, public, or corporate library setting.
- Core Competencies: Excellent organizational abilities, strong interpersonal and communication skills, high attention to detail, and operational familiarity with library assets.
- Preferred Capability: Basic to intermediate computer literacy (working knowledge of modern library management software or office tools is an added advantage).
