Job Summary

The Obstetrician ERT delivers life-saving maternal and neonatal healthcare during emergency deployments. Positioned on IMC's 48-hour standby roster, this specialist manages prenatal check-ups, performs C-sections, executes neonatal resuscitation, manages severe obstetric emergencies (PPH, preeclampsia), and provides technical support to local referral networks.

Key Roles & Operational Responsibilities

1. Emergency Maternal & Surgical Intervention

Obstetric Emergency Management: Provide immediate clinical and surgical response for acute complications including postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), preeclampsia, placental abruption, umbilical cord prolapse, and shoulder dystocia.
Surgical & Assisted Deliveries: Perform C-sections, vacuum extractions, and forceps deliveries when vaginal delivery is not medically safe in disaster settings.
Prenatal & Postnatal Care: Conduct health check-ups, screen high-risk pregnancies, monitor labor progress, and educate expectant mothers on warning signs.

2. Neonatal Resuscitation & Inter-Disciplinary Collaboration

Newborn Resuscitation: Deliver immediate life-saving care, stabilization, and resuscitation to compromised newborns at delivery.
Healthcare Partnering: Collaborate with multi-national teams including neonatologists, anesthesiologists, midwives, and field nurses to optimize emergency care flow.

3. Record Keeping, Data & Technical Advisory

Medical Documentation: Maintain accurate, confidential medical documentation detailing prenatal, delivery, and postpartum interventions.
Technical Guidance: Provide clinical mentoring, referral guidance, and capacity-building support to local health facility staff in conflict or disaster zones.

Foundational Capabilities & Prerequisites

Minimum Qualifications

Medical License & Specialization: Graduate of an accredited Obstetrics and Gynecology specialization program holding an active, unencumbered medical license.
Clinical Experience: Minimum 3 to 5 years of post-specialization experience as an OB/GYN in public, private, or humanitarian health facilities.
Emergency Agility: Demonstrated ability to manage high-pressure, resource-constrained clinical environments and work effectively with diverse cultures.
Data & Reporting: Capacity to collect and submit epidemiologic and patient data required by humanitarian coordination clusters.
