Line Boring Technician

Job Summary

The Line Boring Technician sets up and operates portable hydraulic/electric line boring machines, performs bore welding, and conducts precision alignment on heavy machinery (excavators, wheel loaders, dump trucks). This specialist measures tolerances with bore gauges and micrometers, executes journal turning/flange facing, and restores bores to OEM specifications in field and workshop environments.

Key Roles & Operational Responsibilities

1. On-Site Precision Line Boring & Bore Welding

• Bore Machining: Set up, align, and operate portable hydraulic or electric line boring rigs to repair worn, elongated, or misaligned bores across heavy construction machinery.
• Bore Restoration & Welding: Execute automated or manual bore welding and build-up processes, followed by precision machining to restore bores to exact OEM dimensional specifications.
• Specialized Machining: Perform journal turning, flange facing, and facing/grooving operations as required during structural component rebuilds.

2. Precision Alignment, Measurement & Technical Interpretation

• Precision Measurements: Conduct precise dimensional audits before, during, and after machining using micrometers, inside/outside calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and optical/laser alignment systems.
• Drawing & Manual Analysis: Read and interpret technical drawings, engineering blueprints, machinery manuals, and OEM clearance specification tables.

3. Equipment Care, HSE & Cross-Functional Coordination

• Tool & Rig Maintenance: Inspect, service, and maintain line boring drive units, boring bars, facing heads, welding equipment, and cutting inserts to ensure operational readiness.
• Team Collaboration: Work alongside heavy equipment mechanics, structural welders, and site managers to schedule repairs efficiently and minimize equipment downtime.
• Safety & Documentation: Comply strictly with site Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards and prepare detailed technical reports documenting pre/post-repair dimensions.

Foundational Capabilities & Prerequisites

Required Technical Profile & Experience

• Education Baseline: Diploma or Technical Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Machining, Fitting & Turning, Heavy Equipment Maintenance, or a related trade.
• Professional Experience: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in line boring, precision machining, or heavy equipment structural maintenance.
• Specialized Machinery Exposure: Direct experience operating portable line boring rigs and bore welding systems in construction, mining, or heavy industrial settings.
• Equipment Knowledge: Demonstrated history repairing earthmoving and heavy machinery (e.g., excavators, wheel loaders, articulated dump trucks, bulldozers, backhoes).
• Measurement Mastery: High proficiency in using precision measurement tools (bore gauges, micrometers, dial indicators, laser alignment tools).
• Work Style: Ability to work independently and troubleshoot technical issues under field conditions in remote locations across Uganda.

• High commitment to site HSE protocols, hazard identification, and personal protective equipment (PPE) standards.
