Risk And Compliance Officer

Job Summary

The Risk and Compliance Officer manages statutory filing calendars, regulatory return ledgers, internal audit checklists, anti-money laundering (AML) logs, data protection compliance sheets, and staff training records. Core duties include drafting internal corporate policies; tracking reporting deadlines for the IRA and FIA; testing internal accounting and operational controls; running risk assessments; and compiling remedial compliance reports for executive review.

Key Roles & Operational Responsibilities

1. Regulatory Alignment & Statutory Governance

• Monitor, interpret, and align corporate operations with changing legal obligations enforced by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA), National Information Technology Authority (NITA), and Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB).
• Manage the master regulatory filing calendar, tracking institutional submission windows to ensure all statutory returns, liquidity metrics, and operational audits are delivered on time.
• Review, update, and strengthen internal policies, business documentation, and client onboarding files to comply with anti-money laundering (AML), combatting the financing of terrorism (CFT), and data privacy laws.

2. Risk Management Frameworks & Internal Controls

• Design, implement, and optimize scalable internal risk management frameworks and operational controls that integrate smoothly into day-to-day corporate workflows.
• Identify operational gaps, credit exposures, or workflow risks early, flagging concerns to the Managing Director and drafting practical, data-driven remedial action plans.
• Perform regular internal compliance audits to evaluate how well employees follow corporate procedures and check the health of operational security metrics.

3. Culture Cultivation & Collaborative Mentorship

• Champion a proactive compliance culture across OLEA, turning risk principles from a rigid checklist into an ongoing corporate mindset.
• Develop, coordinate, and deliver interactive training modules for internal teams, giving colleagues the tools to manage risks independently within their respective divisions.
• Assist in specialized corporate governance projects, responding flexibly as internal operational needs and regional market dynamics shift.

Foundational Capabilities & Prerequisites

Required Technical Profile & Academic Track

• Formal Education: A completed Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB), Insurance, Banking, Risk Management, Finance, or a closely related field.
• Workforce Longevity: A minimum of two (2) years of active, professional experience within the corporate workforce.
• Core Competency: Strong critical thinking skills, excellent legal and financial report-writing abilities, and the confidence to communicate complex regulatory risks clearly to executive panels.
• Mindset Attributes: A collaborative, adaptable approach to problem-solving, high emotional intelligence, and a genuine curiosity for continuous structural optimization.

Preferred Credentials & Sector Assets

• Domain Experience: Prior working knowledge of risk and compliance principles, with hands-on experience inside the East African insurance brokerage, underwriting, or broader financial services sectors considered a distinct asset.
• Professional Qualifications: Active professional certifications or ongoing enrollment in courses through recognized bodies in Risk Management, Compliance, Internal Audit, or Insurance (e.g., Certified Risk Analyst, ITC, ACAMS, or CIA tracks) will provide a clear competitive advantage.
