Job Summary
The Certified Arborist inspects, maintains, and treats trees and vegetation across US Navy grounds on Diego Garcia. This specialist conducts ISA tree health and risk assessments, trims vegetation around sensitive defense infrastructure (fence lines, power poles, fuel lines), operates heavy landscaping machinery, and manages storm damage emergency response.
Key Roles & Operational Responsibilities
1. Arboriculture & Tree Risk Governance
- Health & Pest Diagnostics: Perform visual health assessments to identify pests, fungal/bacterial diseases, nutrient deficits, and structural defects in island trees and vegetation.
- Treatment & Remediation: Formulate and execute corrective treatments, including selective pruning, deep-root fertilization, soil aeration, pest mitigation, and irrigation adjustments.
- Emergency Response: Provide 24/7 emergency response for storm damage, hazardous fallen limbs, and wind-blown trees blocking roadways, fence lines, or base infrastructure.
2. DoD Facility Grounds & Infrastructure Maintenance
- Service Standards Compliance: Maintain improved grounds, prestige zones, pipeline berms, and tank farms strictly following DoD Service Level Standards J-1503050-06.
- Infra-Adjacent Pruning: Safely trim and clear vegetation touching or impeding perimeter fences, power poles, guy wires, building perimeters, valve boxes, streetlights, and fire hydrants.
- Debris & Waste Management: Safely collect, process, and dispose of green waste and wood debris adhering to base environmental and safety standards.
3. Equipment Operation & Inspection Reporting
- Machinery Operation: Operate and maintain chainsaws, pole saws, stump grinders, hydraulic shears, wood chippers, and hand-pruning tools safely.
- Contract Logging: Document tree inspections, maintenance schedules, hazard removals, and treatment applications for government reporting and contract audits.
Foundational Capabilities & Prerequisites
Required Technical Profile & Qualifications
- Mandatory Certification: Active ISA Certified Arborist® credential from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) or recognized international equivalent.
- Professional Track Record: 2 to 4 years of hands-on experience in professional arboriculture or commercial/government grounds maintenance.
- Education Baseline: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Equipment Proficiency: Proven experience operating chainsaws, stump grinders, pole saws, and heavy tree-trimming equipment.
- Passport & Medical Clearance: Valid passport with at least 1 year of validity remaining and full physical capability to pass contract medical deployment screenings.
- Physical Demands: Physical agility to perform outdoor labor in tropical environments, work at heights, and lift heavy equipment/wood debris.
Preferred Qualifications
- OCONUS/Austere Experience: Prior experience working in remote, OCONUS, or military deployment environments with multi-national teams.
- Advanced Certifications: ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) credential.
- DoD Standard Familiarity: Working knowledge of DoD grounds standards (J-1503050-06), OSHA safety guidelines, and military environmental compliance.
