Job Summary
The Senior Backend Engineer – Data Infrastructure designs high-throughput pipelines for structured and unstructured clinical data, maintains real-time stream processing systems (Kafka, Flink), and builds HL7/FHIR adapters for EHR platforms. This engineer ensures data observability, partners with ML teams to architect feature stores, manages large-scale analytical databases (PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, BigQuery), and participates in on-call operational excellence rotations.
Key Roles & Operational Responsibilities
1. High-Throughput Ingestion & Real-Time Streaming
- Pipeline Architecture: Design, deploy, and own scalable data ingestion pipelines handling massive volumes of structured and unstructured clinical event streams.
- Stream Processing: Build and maintain low-latency, real-time streaming architectures using Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, or Spark Streaming.
- Feature Store Integration: Partner directly with Staff ML Engineers to design, populate, and optimize real-time feature stores and training data pipelines for clinical foundation models.
2. Healthcare Interoperability & Data Platform Design
- EHR Connector Engineering: Develop robust HL7 v2 and FHIR R4 integration adapters to ingest data seamlessly from major health system platforms and EHR vendors.
- Database Management: Operate and scale analytical and transactional storage engines, including PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, and BigQuery.
- Observability & Schema Integrity: Enforce data quality checks, end-to-end line observability, Change Data Capture (CDC) patterns, and schema evolution protocols across all active ingestion channels.
3. Operational Excellence & System Reliability
- Infrastructure Reliability: Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, and strict SLAs for data pipelines supporting life-critical AI decision systems.
- On-Call Culture: Contribute to system reliability through regular on-call engineering rotations, post-incident reviews, and automated blameless post-mortems.
Foundational Capabilities & Prerequisites
Required Technical Profile & Experience
- Academic Foundation: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Industry Experience Baseline: Minimum of 5+ years of backend engineering experience with a direct focus on large-scale data systems and distributed architectures.
- Stream Processing Expertise: Deep expertise in stream processing frameworks (Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, or Spark Streaming).
- Programming Proficiency: Strong proficiency in Go, Java, or Python for building high-performance, low-latency backend systems.
- Database Systems: Proven experience designing and operating large-scale databases (PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, BigQuery).
- Data Modeling: Solid understanding of relational/non-relational data modeling, schema evolution strategies, and CDC patterns.
