Job Summary
The Software Engineer split-allocates time between Python-based build-system development, cloud-specific feature implementation directly within Ubuntu Server, continuous integration pipeline operations, and direct engineering collaboration with Tier-1 public cloud platforms. The role focuses on automating stable OS delivery mechanisms to support modern containerized, virtualized, and GPU-aided AI workloads.
Key Roles & Operational Responsibilities
1. Image Delivery & CI/CD Pipeline Automation
- Architect, construct, and manage highly reliable, automated image generation, validation, and publication pipelines.
- Develop and maintain robust continuous delivery codebases utilizing Python, Jenkins, and shell scripting.
- Drive end-to-end telemetry and monitoring of the build pipelines to ensure day-zero stability of production images.
2. Cloud OS Feature Engineering
- Design, build, and integrate optimizations, drivers, and platform-specific feature enhancements into Ubuntu Server to maximize cloud native efficiency.
- Engineer integrations targeting modern enterprise workloads, including container runtimes, Kubernetes, and GPU-accelerated computing for AI workloads.
- Debug deep, system-level issues across kernel-to-userland borders and deliver clean, high-quality upstream fixes.
3. Open Source & Partner Collaboration
- Code-review peer submissions, participate in architectural design workshops, and draft comprehensive documentation for custom tooling.
- Coordinate directly with engineering contacts at major cloud providers to translate platform feature roadmaps into Ubuntu OS capabilities.
- Engage actively with internal Canonical teams and the broader open-source community to foster collaborative tool evolution.
Foundational Capabilities & Prerequisites
Required Technical Profile & Academic Track
- Academic Foundation: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a heavily quantitative technical discipline.
- Core Development Language: Professional, practical experience in Python software development natively inside Linux environments.
- Infrastructure Literacy: Demonstrated practical experience deploying and managing workloads on major public clouds (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Core Specializations: Active interest and practical experience in at least three (3) of the following functional domains:
- Container ecosystems (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
- DevOps automation frameworks and orchestration utilities
- Open-source software contribution and workflows
- Web API consumption, design, and integration
- Advanced Linux systems administration
- Python packaging conventions and distributions
- Cloud native application design
