Job Summary
Compelling Works is hiring a mid-level Fullstack Developer & Technical Advisor in Kampala, Uganda. Responsibilities include designing and building fullstack web applications, consuming RESTful APIs, managing SQL/NoSQL databases, and providing client-facing advisory support across Africa. Requires 2-4 years of experience and a valid passport. Deadline: August 15, 2026.
Key Roles & Operational Responsibilities
1. Software Development & Engineering
- Fullstack Architecture: Design, develop, and maintain web applications and systems spanning from backend databases to frontend user interfaces.
- Code Quality & Testing: Write clean, modular, well-documented, and testable code; participate actively in code reviews and automated testing practices.
- API Integration: Build and consume RESTful APIs, integrating third-party services as required by project specifications.
- Agile Delivery: Participate in Agile ceremonies (sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives) and contribute to technical estimates and project documentation.
2. Technical Advisory & Client Engagement
- Client Advisory: Provide expert technical advisory support during project scoping, assessment missions, and workshops.
- Requirements Translation: Translate client needs and operational constraints into practical, well-reasoned technical recommendations and architecture notes.
- Stakeholder Communication: Represent Compelling Works professionally during client interactions and in-country travel, communicating progress, technical trade-offs, and risks clearly.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with project managers, UI/UX designers, and domain specialists to deliver robust client solutions.
Foundational Capabilities & Prerequisites
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Experience: 2 to 4 years of professional experience in fullstack software development.
- Frontend Expertise: Solid experience with at least one modern JavaScript framework (e.g., React, Vue, or Angular).
- Backend Expertise: Solid experience with backend development environments (e.g., Node.js, Python, PHP, or similar).
- Database Knowledge: Working knowledge of both relational (SQL) and non-relational (NoSQL) database technologies.
- Tools & Infrastructure: Proficiency with version control (Git); familiarity with cloud hosting platforms (AWS, Azure, or DigitalOcean) is an advantage.
- Mobility & Advisory Exposure: Valid passport and willingness to travel regularly within Africa; prior exposure to client-facing work or consulting is a strong plus.
Working Conditions & Travel
- Base Location: Kampala office (Mandatory core hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM).
- Travel Requirements: Periodic travel is expected to support client engagements, primarily within Africa.
- Flexibility: Schedule flexibility may be required around travel dates, project milestones, and urgent client deadlines.
